What Affects Tour Prices

Two tours that look alike on paper can carry quite different prices. Here’s why.

A broad red sandstone monolith stands beyond tall desert grasses and low vegetation under a blue-to-golden sky with a visible crescent moon.

Have these ready before you compare

A price only makes sense once you know what you’re comparing. Jot these down first.

✓  Your travel dates, and how flexible they are

✓  Who’s travelling, so each guest is priced correctly

✓  The style of overnight stay you’d prefer

✓  Where you plan to start the tour from

✓  Any meals, fees or extras you want included

Nine factors

What shapes the final price

01  The operator. Each tour is run by an independent Australian tour operator, and each one sets its own itinerary, inclusions and pricing.

02  Travel dates. The particular days you choose can change what you pay for the same tour.

03  Season. Prices can differ across the year, and some tours run only in certain seasons.

04  Accommodation type. Where the itinerary includes an overnight stay, the type of accommodation affects the price.

05  Passenger category. Operators may price guests differently depending on the passenger category that applies to them.

06  Group size. How many people are on the tour, or in your booking, can shift the cost.

07  Included meals. Some packages include more meals than others, and that’s reflected in the price.

08  National park fees. Check whether park fees are part of the package or something you’ll need to cover yourself.

09  Optional upgrades. Any extras you add on top of the standard itinerary will change the final total.

A lower headline price isn’t always the better-value tour.

Before you weigh two prices side by side, check what each one actually covers. Our guide to What’s Included and What Varies runs through the inclusions that differ most between operators.

Comparing like with like

The tour price is only part of the trip.

A two-day Uluru tour usually covers two days, with one overnight stay where the itinerary says so. What sits around those two days often isn’t part of the package. Flights to or from the Northern Territory and accommodation before or after the tour may not be included, so it’s worth adding them to your own budget early on.

Where you start matters too. Departure points differ between operators, and distances in the Red Centre are long, so a tour that looks cheaper could leave you with extra travel to reach the start. Our Planning Guide: Distances and Departure Points explains what to think about.

We don’t publish a single price on this page because the final figure depends on the factors above and is set by the operator you choose. Tell us your dates and travellers and we’ll help you compare suitable tours; the operator confirms the final price.
